Japan is a beautiful but disaster-prone
country, with earthquakes, typhoons and heavy rain occurring every year.
Travelers need reliable and easy-to-understand disaster information in their own language to stay safe.
In this article, I will introduce useful multilingual tools such as “Safety tips”, NHK WORLD-JAPAN, and Japan Safe Travel, so that you can enjoy your trip with more confidence.
Multilingual disaster app “Safety tips”
まず、私が一番最初におすすめしたい
のが、観光庁が監修している
多言語防災アプリ“Safety tips”です。
This site provides information in three
languages (four languages): English, Chinese (traditional and simplified),
and Korean.
「Safety tips」Web site
- “Safety tips” is a disaster information app supervised by the Japan Tourism Agency for foreign travelers.
- It provides real-time alerts for earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons and weather warnings on your smartphone.
- Supported languages include English, Chinese (Simplified/Traditional), Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Tagalog, Nepali, Khmer, Burmese, Mongolian and Japanese.
アプリ内では、
緊急地震速報や津波情報だけでなく、
避難情報や災害時に取るべき行動のガイドも確認できます。
If you are planning to visit Japan,

NHK WORLD-JAPAN and multilingual BOSAI portal
次に、ニュースと災害情報の両方を
多言語で提供しているのが、
NHK WORLD-JAPANです。
You can access Japan’s latest news on the websites.
「NHK WORLD」Web site
- NHK WORLD-JAPAN offers news and disaster alerts in many languages via website and app.
- The app now provides push notifications for earthquakes, tsunamis and severe weather in 11 languages.
- NHK also operates the “Japan LIFE & BOSAI” multilingual portal, which gathers links to disaster-related information in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, French, Hindi and more.

旅行中に大きな地震や台風が
発生したときには、テレビがなくても、
NHK WORLD-JAPANのアプリやサイトで
最新情報をチェックできます。
特に、
“Multilingual Portal: Japan LIFE & BOSAI”
のページは、災害時の呼びかけや
生活情報へのリンクがまとめられていて、
外国人にとって心強い情報源です。
Japan Safe Travel (JNTO) and other official sites
インバウンド観光客向けに、
日本政府観光局（JNTO）が提供している
のが “Japan Safe Travel Information”
です。
Japan Safe Travel Information
- The JNTO website is available in around 15 languages and includes a Japan Safe Travel section.
- It posts travel advisories and, in the event of a disaster, provides links and guidance for foreign travelers.
- The site also collects useful links to disaster information and apps, including “Safety tips”.
また、地方自治体の英語版サイトや
観光サイトでも、避難所の場所や
ハザードマップなどが公開されている
ケースが増えています。
In an emergency, it is important to check
information from your local city office
(municipality) to find evacuation centers, water supply points and relief distribution locations.

Basic earthquake safety tips for visitors
地震が起きたときの基本行動も、
かんたんに共有しておきます。
- Do not panic. Protect your head from falling objects and stay away from windows and shelves.
- If you are indoors, take cover under a
sturdy table or desk until the shaking stops. - If you are outside, move to an open area away from buildings, glass, and power poles.
- If you are in an elevator, press all floor buttons and get off at the nearest floor when it stops.
Visitors should still follow basic safety rules and check official information through apps and websites.
Before you travel: my recommendations
最後に、私自身が「もし自分が外国から
日本に来るなら、ここまでは準備して
おきたい」と思うポイントをまとめます。
- Download at least one disaster app such as “Safety tips” before arrival, and enable location and notifications.
- Bookmark NHK WORLD-JAPAN and JNTO Japan Safe Travel pages in your browser.
- Prepare a small emergency kit: flashlight, portable battery, copies of passport and important contacts, some snacks and water.
- Learn a few simple phrases such as “Evacuation area?” or “Is it safe here?” in Japanese, or keep them written down.
